Transfer funds electronically safely and easily

Set up Interac e-Transfer® recipients within Online Banking to take advantage of this secure and convenient method for sending funds electronically to friends, family, and business associates.

To send an e-Transfer, all you need to know is the recipient’s name and email address or mobile phone number. You don’t need to know their account number or even which financial institution they deal with; no personal or financial information is exchanged. Once ready and set up, funds can be transferred typically with a 30-minute delay, unless conditions for sending a faster Instant Transfer are met (see details below).

Adding a recipient

To add an e-Transfer recipient, you must first log in to Online Banking. Once logged in:

  • Select Transfers, then Interac e-Transfer from the left navigation menu.
  • Add Recipient and enter their name, email address and mobile phone number.
  • Next, select how the recipient is to be notified (email and/or mobile phone).
  • Enter a security question and answer known to the person, then click Add Recipient.

You can also do this in Mobile Banking. Simple select e-Transfers, then Settings, then Manage Recipients.

Editing a recipient

To edit an e-Transfer recipient, log in to Online Banking:

  • Select Transfers, then Interac e-Transfer from the left navigation menu.
  • Select Edit/Delete Recipients and make the required changes.
  • You can also do add and edit a recipient in Mobile Banking. Simple select e-Transfers, then Settings, then Manage Recipients.

e-Transfer limits

The following rolling limits* apply when sending funds through Interac e-Transfer:

  • Transaction limit: $10,000
  • 24-hour limit: $20,000
  • 7-day limit: $50,000
  • 30-day limit: $100,000

The following limits apply when receiving funds through Interac e-Transfer: 

  • Transaction limit: $25,000
  • Daily or weekly limit: none
  • Monthly limit: none
  • Request funds limit: $3,000

Sending and receiving an Instant Transfer

Instant Transfers allow e-Transfer recipients to receive immediate notification of the transfer after the funds have been automatically deposited to the account.

Instant Transfers may apply as follows:

1. For low dollar amounts 

The maximum transfer amount is $500 (or a cumulative total of $500 with a rolling 24-hour period) – Interac checks if the e-Transfer is below that dollar amount and sends a notification to the recipient immediately.

2. When there is sender-to-recipient behavioural history 

The maximum amount per Instant Transfer is $5000 – Interac checks if the e-Transfer is below this amount and sends the notification immediately if there is a history between the sender and the recipient.

Stay safe

Be sure to set up a security question where the answer is known only to you and the recipient and that can’t be easily guessed. Don’t ever send the answer by email or text in case it gets intercepted and do not share in a public forum such as social media. It is best to phone the recipient directly. And never include the answer in the e-Transfer message field.

Set up Auto Deposit 

Through Online Banking, you can register your email address and have any funds sent by e-Transfer automatically deposited to your designated account. You can access funds faster without having to select a financial institution of answer a security question to accept the funds.
